Finding out about a desk

1757 days ago by Dan Lyke | 2 comments »

My sweety procured a desk, under the condition that we figure out how to remove it from the house it was coming from, thinking that we’d use it for the wood. It’s got a typewriter lift, so it’s definitely pre-computers and probably pre-electric typewriters, and as we’ve dug into it, even though we don’t need a desk, we’ve started wondering whether we should cut it up for lumber or try to restore it. The vertical pieces are all solid wood, the top and dra...

Kitchen Cabinets #2: The wood is in - yippie

1758 days ago by Zuki | 6 comments »

Finally !!!! 2 weeks have stretched into 4 . . . but the wood is finally in. Im going to take a peek at it tomorrow and pay the guy. Hopefully it will be delivered tomorrow as well. I cut down from the initial 500bf to 100bf as I wanted to play with some Poplar first. This is the first time I have purchased wood outside of the big box stores and I do not want to get to stressed out with having too much wood kicking around. DW also has a number of smaller peojects that she wants me t...

Blogging Be-tween Other Office Paper-Work --by RusticWoodArt

Blogging Be-tween Other Office Paper-Work Yes this is how my morning has filled up, while sitting here at my desk, amongst this stacked pile of what must be done with paperwork. This is not what brings out the best in me at i-of-eye, but then again with patience and giving of thanks….so I will overcome! Notes to myself, also include: —-writing notes on what is to be done around here at the farm….—-writing notes and calling about site work, energy codes, building ...

Opportunity #3: Reclaimed Wood

1758 days ago by MsDebbieP | 18 comments »

on Saturday, (following our LumberJocks’ picnic the week before), we had a bonfire breakfast at our house and my Aunt and Uncle brought us a gift— an old church pew that they had in a lumber pile. They figure that the wood is well over 100 years old. We have the bench part, and the back is still buried in their wood pile, waiting to be dug out. I have no idea what the wood is but it is nice and thick and really long (aren’t I good with measurements??). My favourite par...

Ms Debbie P's 2007 Shop Tour and Inspection #3: Tuesdays With Bob

1758 days ago by Douglas Bordner | 11 comments »

This week we visit the shop and garden of Bob Babcock, the gentleman tree-farmer and Lumberjock of Carver, Mass. Deb is checking the posts of Bob’s Lyptus and cedar gate. Say, look at that new pen there. I think it looks so natural with the clipboard. We start outside, because friends, that piece of Carver, Massachusetts is Bob’s workshop. Tons of garden projects, excellent landscaping with his carpentered focal points on all sides. Did Bob help pick the summer challenge? I...

Outdoor "Coffee" Table #5: A little time'll get ya...

Be forewarned: What follows is not the most interesting content, but I’m just trying to document the steps of this process… I had an ounce of time yesterday afternoon (less than an hour) so I cut up the stock to rough dimensions. I was nervous about this after finding out just how hard Jatoba really is. Very hard wood. Wasn’t sure me little Crapsman (cast iron top contractors saw w/ belt driven 1hp motor) was gonna do the trick, but boy am I proud of it! The pieces w...

Chess Men and board #1: Prototype design

1758 days ago by woodboxman | 4 comments »

So, I’ve always wanted to turn some chess figures and build a Chess board. I have been tinkering around with some designs and finally turned a first design prototype. I already don’t like the lack of taper to the top. this piece, the bishop is 3 1/2 inches tall.I’m gonna make the pawns 2 3/4 inches, the Rooks 3 1/4 inches, knights 3 1/2, queen 4 inches and the king will be 4 inches. The squares will be 2 inches. The light wood is Maple i think and the dark wood is Walnut...
